Wolastoqey Language App Launch-FR and SJ
March 8, 2018 by UNB
On Thursday March 16, the Mi’kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre (MWC) at the University of New Brunswick will be hosting the Wolastoqey Language App Launch from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., at Marshall d’Avray Hall, 102.
The Wolastoqey Language App is designed by UNB’s Elder-in-Residence Imelda Perley and The Mi’kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre (MWC) Director, David Perley. The goal of the language app is to help others learn Wolastoqey teachings, embedded in the language. The basic language skills communicated through the app will help any persons with the desire to learn, feel more confident speaking and writing in the language. Wolastoqey Elders believe language connects us, to important parts of our identity, so it is essential to find a way to bring the language to the people! Since we all use our phones on a daily basis, an app seemed like a logical step to promote language learning.
There are many categories to choose from when navigating the language app. For example, you may want to find out how to smudge in the language. An icon has been included on the app called “Language of Ceremony” and a subcategory in this section entitled “How to Smudge.” Click on this icon, and you will hear Elder Imelda Perley who will guide you through the ceremony of smudging in the language! It is really that easy and user-friendly!
We are so excited to have produced such an amazing language learning tool, and would be happy to have you come and celebrate with us!
*a light lunch will be provided, along with coffee and beverages for those attending the launch party.
